Legoland is an amusement park inspired by Lego themes, figurines and recently Lego movies. The first one was built inBillund, Denmark, bur nowadays there are several Legoland around the world, including Florida, California, Japan, Germany, Dubai, Malaysia and England.
This review is about Legoland in Billund.
Date of visit: August 2021
What we liked about it:
- We have not visited any other Legoland. But we believe that the fact that this one is the very first Legoland that existed, has its charm. And that it is built in Denmark, where Lego comes from. You get to breath the danish culture, their language, their food.
- We liked that it is not that big compared to Disney World or other theme parks. It is in european land, so more compact by default. But the area to cover is manageable and does not feel so overwhelming. I think it is good when you have small kids with you and when you a´want to keep a somewhat relaxing pace, you are on vacation after all.
- I liked very much that there are toilets spread out all over the park. You will always be able to find toilets near you. wherever you are in the park.
- There are several options of food, burgers, hot dogs, and also sit down restaurants. Overpriced yes, but not overly overpriced. There are even available seatung areas for those who bring their own food. Having that possibility is a big plus, if you ask me.
- There are a couple of attractions that are actually interactive. It is not only about sitting in the car and then wait. There is the one about fire brigade that has to manage a fire and there is another one about pirates, who have to handle a real water battle. If you do this one, you have to know that you will get wet and a lot!
- It was really nice that Lego was available at all queue lines, so kids could entertain themselves.
- We got to see the newly built Lego Movie area of the park.
What we think could have been better:
- We really did not know much about what to expect about Legoland, but it was a bit dissapointing that it is basically an amusement park, not much different from all others like Disney World, Disneyland, Liseberg, etc. The only difference is that it is inspired in Lego characters and movies. But the experience is basically the same, rollercoasters, rides, etc
- Digitalization is good. But having a map in your hands is always better in my opinion. It was difficult to find maps of the park. They suggest downloading the park app. But I personally do not find it so practical, plus I prefer to save the battery in my phone for other things. Having to deal with a phone, requires also more work, cliking here and there, etc. A map in my hands that I can see on the spot will always be my preference. In any case, they can be located on a side wall near the main entrance, but not anywhere else that we could find.
- The park closes quite early at 5 pm. And the rides start closing at 4 pm. You basically get a limited amount of hourse to enjoy the park. Compared to Disney Parks some of which close even after midnight and have night shows, here you pay basically for only day time amusement.
What we wish we knew beforehand:
- That there is a small room tucked somewhere in the park where kids can actually build with Lego. We found it at the end of our visit, so our kids were left a bit frustated, one of them is a truly Lego fan though.
- That in Denmark during Covid summer of 2021, they required proof of the digital vaccination pass, available to europeans, at all food establishments to be able to eat inside. Luckily we had them, but it took us as a surprise.
Practical info:
- I recommend to start at the back of the park and leave the front to the end.
- It is better to take your kids once they are over 1.20 meters. A lot of the rides have this min. length requirement.
